Thorong Peak Climbing

Breathtaking Annapurna Views

Thorong Peak (6,144m) stands as one of Nepalโ€™s most rewarding โ€œtrekking peaks,โ€ perched perfectly above the famous Annapurna Circuit. For climbers seeking a moderately challenging climb, spectacular alpine scenery, and a short expedition-style experience, Thorong Peak is an ideal choice. This climb seamlessly combines classic Himalayan trekking with an achievable summit push, making it suitable for both beginners and seasoned climbers looking for a warm-up peak.

Why Climb Thorong Peak?

Thorong Peak offers a non-technical route, making it suitable for fit trekkers who want to experience their first 6,000m climb. It’s an incredible choice for those seeking a high-altitude adventure without the complexity of technical climbing.

Incredible 360ยฐ Summit Views:

From the top, youโ€™ll be treated to one of the most stunning panoramic views in the Himalayas, including:

1: Annapurna I, II, III & IV

2: Gangapurna

3: Tilicho Peak

4: Dhaulagiri Range

5: Nilgiri and Thorong La region

The best season to climb Thorong Peak (6,144โ€ฏm) in Nepal is generally during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons:

Autumn (September to November)

This is the most popular and ideal time of year. The weather is usually stable, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. Snow conditions are generally favourable for climbing, and the trekking trails to Thorong La (part of the Annapurna Circuit) are accessible.

Spring (March to May)

This season is also good, with warmer temperatures and melting snow making climbing safer. You also get rhododendron blooms along the lower trekking trails.

Guide-to-Client Ratios

A: 1:1ย (One Guide per Client)

Ideal for less experienced climbers, ensuring full support and personalised guidance throughout the climb.

B: 1:2ย (One Guide for Two Climbers):

Common for well-acclimatised teams; offers a balance of safety and efficiency on technical sections.

C: 1:3โ€“4ย (One Guide for 3โ€“4 Climbers):

Best suited for highly skilled, experienced climbers capable of moving independently while still receiving support in key technical areas.

Easily Combined with Annapurna Circuit

The journey starts directly from the classic Annapurna Circuit trail, making logistical access straightforward and reducing the overall expedition length. Itโ€™s perfect for those looking to climb a peak without straying too far from the well-trodden paths of this iconic trek.

If you want clear views, stable weather, and safer snow conditions, October and November are considered the optimal months.

Climbing Route Overview

Approach:

The journey typically begins from Besisahar, and climbers follow the Annapurna Circuit to Manang. After acclimatisation days in Manang, the trail continues to Yak Kharka and then to Thorong Phedi or High Camp.

Base Camp:

Thorong Peak Base Camp is established at an elevation of 5,100โ€“5,200 meters. This is where climbers train in glacier walking and summit techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared for the final push.

Summit Day:

Summit day usually starts around 2:00โ€“3:00 AM. The climb involves:

1: A steep snow slope of 30โ€“40 degrees

2: Short sections of mixed snow and ice

3: Use of fixed ropes in steeper areas

4: Crossing glaciers depending on seasonal snow conditions

5: Average summit time: 6โ€“8 hours ascent, 3โ€“4 hours descent.

Difficulty Level

1: Grade: Alpine PD (Peu Difficile โ€“ slightly difficult)

2: Fitness required: Good physical condition

3: Skills needed: Basic climbing skills (experience with glacier walking is a plus)

4: Endurance: Ability to walk 8โ€“10 hours a day at high altitude

Thorong Peak is less technical than many Nepal climbing peaks but still requires solid fitness and basic mountaineering skills. Itโ€™s an ideal stepping stone for those looking to push their limits on a Himalayan summit.
