Trekking Peak in Nepalโs Annapurna Region
Chulu West Peak is one of the most spectacular trekking peaks in Nepal, offering climbers a rewarding mix of adventure, culture, and breathtaking alpine scenery. Standing at 6,419 meters (21,055โฏft), this peak provides panoramic views of the Annapurna Massif, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and the distant Tibetan plateau. Located in the Damodar Himal range, Chulu West is considered moderately technical, making it an ideal choice for trekkers who want to venture into high-altitude mountaineering without the extreme challenges of the 7,000m or 8,000m giants.
Chulu West Peak was first climbed in 1952 by a Japanese expedition. Since then, it has become a favourite destination for climbers worldwide seeking a Himalayan summit that combines technical experience with manageable difficulty and incredible scenery.
Situated north of the Annapurna Range in Nepalโs Manang District, Chulu West Peak lies near the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416โฏm) along the Annapurna Circuit. The trek to base camp passes through traditional Gurung and Tibetan-influenced villages, high-altitude meadows, and glacial streams, offering trekkers a rich cultural and natural experience along the way.
The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) classifies Chulu West Peak as a moderately technical trekking peak. Climbing involves glacier travel, snow slopes, and the use of essential mountaineering equipment such as crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and fixed ropes. Summit day is physically demanding, typically requiring 10โ12 hours of ascent on slopes with gradients between 30โ45 degrees. Prior experience in high-altitude trekking above 5,000โฏm is strongly recommended.

Camp Elevations
Nestled on a moraine ridge with panoramic views, Base Camp is where climbers begin acclimatisation and technical training. Tents, seasonal water, and kitchen facilities are provided.
Reached via a steep, snowy ascent, High Camp is the staging point for the summit push. Fixed ropes may be used depending on snow and ice conditions.
The final ascent involves steep snow slopes and occasional rock sections. Proper equipment, including crampons, an ice axe, a helmet, a harness, and rope, is essential.
