TREKKING SEASON IN NEPAL

Best Seasons for Trekking in Nepal

Trekking in Nepal is a year-round adventure, but the ideal time for your journey depends on the region you plan to explore and the experience you seek. The country offers distinct seasons, each with its own charm, challenges, and natural beauty. Generally, the most favoured months for trekking are September to November (post-monsoon) and March to May (pre-monsoon), but every season has something unique to offer.

Autumn (Septemberโ€“November)

Autumn is considered the prime trekking season in Nepal, attracting the largest number of trekkers. After the monsoon, the air is clear, providing spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks, from Annapurna to Everest. The weather during this season is typically dry and stable, offering a pleasant climate for long hikes.

Temperature:

Daytime temperatures at lower altitudes range around 15โ€“20ยฐC (59โ€“68ยฐF), while mornings and nights at higher elevations (above 4,000 meters) can drop to around -2ยฐC (28.4ยฐF).

Highlights:

Crisp mountain views, vibrant landscapes, and excellent visibility make it perfect for photography and mountaineering. The moderate temperatures also allow for both high-altitude expeditions and lower-altitude trekking comfortably.

Trekking Experience:

Trails are busy but well-serviced, with teahouses and lodges operating at full capacity. Acclimatisation is easier during this season due to stable weather patterns.

Winter (Decemberโ€“February)

Winter trekking is less crowded and offers a unique experience for those seeking solitude. The air is generally dry, but haze can reduce visibility, so it is recommended to allow extra days for your itinerary to accommodate weather variations.

Temperature:

At elevations above 3,000 meters, daytime temperatures hover around 10โ€“17ยฐC (50โ€“62.6ยฐF), while nights can be extremely cold, dropping as low as -20ยฐC (-4ยฐF) in high mountain regions.

Highlights:

Snow-covered landscapes create magical scenery, especially in the Annapurna, Langtang, and Everest regions. Lower altitude areas remain accessible and enjoyable, ideal for trekkers who prefer less strenuous routes.

Trekking Experience:

Higher passes may be closed due to snow and ice, so winter treks are generally recommended for lower-altitude trails. Despite the cold, the tranquillity and pristine beauty of winter trekking are unmatched.

Spring (Marchโ€“May)

Spring is one of the most enchanting times to trek in Nepal, especially in regions like Everest and Annapurna. The weather is pleasant, the flora is in full bloom, and the landscapes are colourful and vibrant.

Temperature:

Lower elevations experience mild warmth, while higher altitudes (above 4,000 meters) are comfortably warm during the day. Nights remain cool but not as harsh as winter.

Highlights:

Rhododendrons and other alpine flowers cover the hillsides in a spectacular display of colours. The skies are clear, providing breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. Spring also coincides with festivals, offering cultural experiences along the trekking routes.

Trekking Experience:

This is a popular season for climbers aiming for Everest Base Camp or other high passes, so trails can be crowded. However, the vibrant energy of fellow trekkers and the abundance of wildlife sightings make spring a rewarding season.

Summer (Early Juneโ€“July)

Summer is the monsoon season in most of Nepal, but certain areas, particularly rain-shadow regions like Upper Mustang, Dolpo, and parts of Kailash, are ideal for trekking during this time.

Temperature:

Warm and humid at lower altitudes, with cooler temperatures in high-altitude regions. Heavy rainfall is common in most regions, but rain-shadow areas remain relatively dry.

Highlights:

Dense forests and green valleys come alive with wildlife and fresh vegetation. Summer trekking is perfect for nature enthusiasts, botanists, and those looking for less crowded trails.

Trekking Experience:

Trekkers should be prepared for occasional rain, muddy trails, and insect activity. Proper rain gear, waterproof footwear, and insect repellent are essential for a comfortable journey.
