Nepal is home to some of the worldโs most iconic Himalayan peaks, and climbing any of them requires proper authorisation and documentation. Since 1978, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has been responsible for issuing climbing permits for peaks up to 6,500 meters. For mountains above 6,500 metersโincluding the 7,000m and 8,000m giantsโpermits are issued exclusively by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA).
Regardless of the peak, all climbing permits must be processed through a registered trekking or expedition agency in Nepal. Independent climbers are not allowed to apply directly. At Adventure Fourteen Summit, we handle the entire permit application on your behalf, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
Before any expedition begins, your expedition leader must collect the official climbing permit in Kathmandu. These permits are checked at various entry points and checkpoints along the trail, so climbers must carry them at all times. Once paid, permit fees are strictly non-refundable.
To ensure a fast, smooth, and successful permit application, the following documents are required from every climber:
A clear, high-resolution colour scan of your passportโs information page. This must match your travel documents exactly.
Recent, clear photos are used for permit records, trekking cards, and various official purposes.
A short professional summary including:
1) Full name:
2) Nationality:
3) Date of birth:
4) Permanent address:
5) Occupation:
6) climbing or trekking experience:
7) Emergency contact details:
This helps authorities assess your background and expedition preparedness.
A medical certificate issued by a licensed doctor confirming that you are physically fit for high-altitude climbing. This should include:
1) General health assessment:
2) Cardiovascular fitness:
3) Respiratory condition:
4) Any pre-existing medical concerns:
Proof of comprehensive travel and medical insurance, specifically covering high-altitude trekking and mountaineering. If you have not finalised insurance yet, you may submit it later; however, it must be provided before your expedition begins.
Travel and medical insurance must clearly state coverage for the following:
Coverage for helicopter evacuation, rescue operations, and transportation to a medical facility.
Your policy must list all activities included in your trip:
– High-altitude trekking
– Peak climbing
– Glacier travel
– Ice and rock climbing
Expeditions above 5,000m, 6,000m, or 7,000m (depending on your objective)
Insurance must be valid throughout your stay in Nepalโincluding arrival and departure days.
Coverage must specify Nepal or the Himalayan region.
Climbers with pre-existing medical conditions must declare them, as failure to do so can result in non-payment of claims.
Travel insurance is a safety net that protects your financial investment and safeguards your well-being during your journey. It compensates you for potential losses such as cancellations, medical emergencies, or unexpected events.
1) The environment is remote and unpredictable
2) The weather can change rapidly
3) Medical facilities are extremely limited in high-altitude regions
4) Helicopter evacuation costs range from USD 3,000 to USD 8,000+
A single emergency evacuation without insurance can cost more than your entire trip.
High-altitude trekking and climbing naturally involve greater risks. Even experienced mountaineers may face:
1) Frostbite or hypothermia
2) Accidents on glaciers or steep terrain
3) Sudden storms or altitude-related illnesses
In severe cases, helicopter rescue is the only option, making insurance essential.
A good insurance plan offers protection on two major fronts:
1) Life-Saving Coverage
2) Emergency helicopter evacuation
3) Rescue operations
4) Emergency medical treatment
5) High-altitude sickness care
1) Trip cancellations
2) Trip delays
3) Lost or damaged baggage
4) Lost passports or travel documents
5) Missed flights due to delays
6) Personal liability
This ensures you can continue your journey safely without unexpected financial burdens.
To confirm your expedition booking, a deposit payment is required. This amount contributes toward the total expedition cost, including permit processing, logistics, and reservation of essential services.
To avoid delays, all required documents should be submitted at least 30 days before your planned departure. This allows our team to prepare, verify, and process your climbing permit on time, ensuring a smooth start to your Himalayan expedition.
